Stop Rust
In order to stop rust on your car, outdoor metals, or any other surface,
you should understand its root cause. Rust is the result of a simple process
called oxidation. When water hits an object with iron in it, the water
breaks down into its component parts – hydrogen and oxygen. The iron
molecules combine with water’s oxygen molecules to form rust.
One simplistic way to stop rust is to cut out the area that is rusted.
Many people try to stop rust on their cars with this method. If you have
only a very small area, you can use a metal cutter to remove completely
the area that has rust on it. You will then need to replace the cut-out
area with another piece of metal and use some type of paste to cover the
hole you have made, which is why this method should be used only for very
small areas that are rusted.
You can stop rust using various chemical solvents as well. These chemicals
are designed to stop rust, and you can find them in hardware stores. They
should have full directions on them; be prepared for this process to take
several hours. You typically will put the solvent on the affected area
and leave it for a certain period of time before cleaning it off. Of course,
the best way to stop rust is not to let it happen at all. You should keep
your car in a garage if at all possible. Bring in any iron-based lawn furniture
and tools when you are done. Many people leave their tools when they finish
a project, opening them up to rusting from the dew or an overnight sprinkle.
The process of getting rid of rust is difficult, so avoiding it in the
first place is your best solution.
